Writing a press release

There are several basic elements that every press release should have in terms of content and how it appears:
  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: These words should appear in the upper left-hand margin of the first line and every letter should be capitalised.
  • Dateline: This should be the city your press release is issued from and the date you are mailing your release.
  • Headline: Skip a couple of lines after the dateline and use a boldface type if possible.
  • Body: The main details of your press release where you should fully develop your message.
    • Say what the release is: New Product Information, New Upgrades, Technical Feature or Company News, etc.
    • Name your product: If your product has a name, make sure this is included. You might laugh, but we've seen far too many news releases that don't mention the name of the product.
    • Name your organisation: Especially if you are submitting news indirectly or through a PR agent, please try to make it easy for us to know which company it belongs to.
  • Contact: Skip a line or two after the body and list your name, title, telephone and fax numbers and email address.
